Many people dream of setting up their own business and spending their days on their passions. But setting up shop can end up being a long and painful process for those of us who are just starting out.
So we thought we’d start asking new businesses about their experiences setting up in a new location to see if we can learn from one another. This week, we’re chatting with Aranda Cafe, featuring Kitchen of Jasmine:
Congratulations on the opening of Aranda Cafe, featuring Kitchen of Jasmine at Atiya Complex in Jerudong! How and why did you pick your location?
We wanted to avoid Gadong n Bandar due to high rents, heavy traffic and difficult parking spaces. We also decided to be in Jerudong as we live in the same area, so we knew that there is not much competition in the market we were targeting.
How did you secure your unit - did you go through a real estate agent, a broker or did you negotiate with the landlord directly?
We contacted the landlord directly as we saw the 'for rent' signage.
What were the biggest surprises that you encountered during the process of finding and securing your premises?
There wasn't really any major surprise for us.
What regulatory requirements would a business need to start up shop?
In order to do renovation works for our cafe, we had to work with a government approved architect who would be able to help us get the OP for our business license.
What do you wish you knew before you started the whole process?
Since we were working with an experienced architect, they had guided us well as to what the relevant government requirements were. This is essential in order to avoid wasting time and money.
What would you recommend to other businesses looking to secure their first premises?
Make a proper business plan - once you do this, you will have an idea of your target market AND where you need to set up your business in order to achieve this.
Aranda Cafe, featuring Kitchen of Jasmine, is located at No.17, Block E, Atiya Complex,
Spg.100, Jalan Jerudong.
